HANDMAKING
SHOES GIVES
THEM CHARACTER

001

Our Approach

All told, our shoemaking process involves over 50 individual pieces, nearly all of them made by hand in Europe’s finest factories by craftspeople trained in Italy’s Brenta region. Handmaking shoes gives them character – subtle patterns in the stitching, or colouring in the upper, reflect the fact that a human has made them. The beauty is in the imperfection.

Where We Began

Truth be told, our founding mister actually was a monsieur. Great-grand-père Bensadoun was a French cobbler, producing and repairing handmade shoes. His son, “Papi” Bensadoun learned his father’s trade and parlayed that skill into a network of shoe stores called Le Pied Mignon. With footwear in his blood, papi’s son, Aldo Bensadoun Mr. B, built on this heritage by bringing old-world expertise into the new world. Thus was born Mr. B’s Gentlemen’s Boutique for ALDO.

Welted Construction

The welting process, which involves cementing the sole to a welt – and on the upper itself – and then hand – stitching it, means that you can resole your Mr. B’s shoes, should you ever need to.

Leather

Mr. B’s uses European leather sourced from Italian tanneries in Tuscany and Veneto. Each piece is inspected to ensure that it is clear, supple and clean, consistent in color, and smooth. This quality leather will not only become softer with time, but if well cared for will also develop a rich patina.

Stitched Construction

The rubber sole of every Mr. B’s athletic shoe is stitched to the leather upper, a traditional craftsman’s method for constructing a shoe that is long-lasting, sturdy and dependable.

Milled Leather

The leather is put into a “dry drum,” with no chemicals and tumbled to soften the fibres within the skins. This gives it a “milled” effect, which is seen as patterns in the leather. It is strong, durable, soft and very flexible, while presenting a more robust and rugged look.

Leather Outsole

A leather outsole has many advantages; one being that it is breathable and lightweight and thus, healthier for your foot. Another is that it looks great, and provides an elegance, feel and luxury that a rubber sole simply cannot.
