Responsible Leather Sourcing

As members of the Leather Working Group (LWG), we are committed to sourcing leather in a responsible and transparent manner to insure animal welfare. We work with other brands, retailers, tanners, manufacturers and experts to improve the traceability and environmental performance of the leather industry. We are proud to share that 99% of our leather products use LWG certified materials.

Other Lower-Footprint Materials

Recycled Polyester (PET)

This material is made using post-consumer recycled polyester (PET) derived from plastic bottles, therefore requiring fewer resources than that of new fibers and generating fewer CO2.

Recycled Thermoplastic Rubber

A malleable blend of synthetic rubber and plastic, this material has the ability to be recycled and reused, thereby reducing carbon emissions, water pollution and the use of new raw material.

Waterborne Polyurethane

Waterborne polyurethane is manufactured with a technology that uses less chemical solvents, energy and water.

Recycled Polyurethane

This material is derived from a polyurethane skin coating on a recycled polyester sub layer. The production of this material requires fewer resources than that of new fibers and generates fewer CO2.

Recycled Polyestern Yarn (PET)

This material is made using post-consumer recycled polyester (PET) derived from plastic bottles.

Ethylene Vinyl-Acetate (EVA) With Algae

Ethylene-vinyl-acetate (EVA) foam is an insole material derived from algae biomass. By removing algae build-ups, we help create and filter freshwater & keep CO2 from entering the atmosphere.

Plant-Based Corn

A new leather alternative, this plant-based corn material helps reduce carbon emissions & non-renewable energy sources.

Improved Packaging

We continuously try to improve our packaging to ensure that we source more certified and post-consumer recycled materials. In 2008, we redesigned our shoebox to include a built-in handle to eliminate the need for a bag. In 2019, we broke up with single-use shopping bags from our stores, saving 10 million bags annually (this represents 11,000 trees!) and decreased our packaging carbon footprint by 39%. In addition, our shoeboxes are made with at least 80% recycled fibers and are certified with the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

Energy Efficient Stores

In 2013, we calculated our carbon footprint and set ourselves a baseline for improvement. Since then, we have improved the energy efficiency of our stores and corporate offices by converting lighting to 100% LED technology for most of our stores, implementing Energy Management Systems (EMS) that control lighting and ventilation and sourcing renewable energy.
